Medical, Educational & Peace Organization
We are a donor-supported organization offering support to others. Our goal is to help people with their medical and education needs, while also consoling our own souls as brother-sister human beings.
- MEPO has, since 1999, offered medical and education and food support to people in Nepal, India, Lesotho, Bangladesh, Iran, and Afghanistan.
- From 2002 to 2020, MEPO and their partner organization HEWAD ran the innovative House of Flowers Montessori Orphanage in Kabul, Afghanistan.
- In September 2020, MEPO and HEWAD established the Garden of Flowers Montessori Preschool in Kabul, serving destitute children ages 3 to 6.
- Following the Taliban take-over in August 2021, the Garden of Flowers closed briefly. But in November of 2021 the school reopened, thanks to the intense determination of the staff who are committed to offering a vibrant and authentic Montessori education for both boys and girls.
- MEPO also began a food aid and salary support program to support needy families in the community affected by the drastic changes in the post-Taliban society.
“If the whole of humankind is to be united, all obstacles must be removed so that all people over the surface of the globe should be playing as children playing in a garden.” (Maria Montessori)
About the Garden of Flowers:
During the ages 3 to 6, a child builds herself through her interactions with the world. The nature of these interactions heavily influences who she becomes. When she can relax in an environment that feeds her natural energy and meets all of her needs, she can experience the world as a joyful place to explore rather than a constricted place to fear. This helps the child build a place of strong inner knowing and confidence. Such benefits last for a lifetime. This is our goal at the Garden of Flowers Montessori Preschool in Kabul.
- The Garden of Flowers offers a caring and natural Montessori environment each day that serves the children’s physical, emotional, social, educational, and mental health needs. They receive a healthy lunch and two snacks daily, and are cared for by a team of 5 very dedicated, caring adults.
- The families of the children express gratitude, relief and amazement at the changes they see in their children. Their children become stronger, healthier, more engaged and helpful and peaceful at home, and gain a head start in confidence, strength and skills.
- The Garden of Flowers Montessori Preschool is a joint effort between Medical, Educational and Peace Organization (MEPO) and HEWAD, an Afghan NGO partner. It is supported solely by individual donations.
“The child who has felt a strong love for his surroundings and for all living creatures, who has discovered joy and enthusiasm in work, gives us reason to hope that humanity can develop in a new direction.” (Maria Montessori)
