Every day the teachers and adults of the Garden of Flowers brave long taxi rides and stressful conditions on the streets to come to the children. Besides teachers Razia and Fatima, there is Najeeba the cook, and Hedayat and Nik Mohammad, the guards and assistants. These adults find the Garden of Flowers to be a refuge – they remind us often that a Montessori environment is beneficial not only for children! They feel very good among the children and each other in the peaceful, joyful environment they have created. (They even talk about not being happy when there is a holiday and they have to stay home!)
We were very happy then to see the celebration that they organized for International Teachers Day on October 5. These teachers love a good celebration!! And of course, children do too. Everyone participated, the children helped decorate the classroom and came dressed in their finest, and all enjoyed the feasting, dancing, and celebrating – a joyful recognition of life, learning and being together.
